Funding for International students at Cranfield University

School of Applied Sciences

The School offer five half fee scholarships to overseas students each year. Applicants must be able to support themselves and cover the other 50% of the fee. The final decision on scholarships is made in May of each year and is based on the qualifications and experience of each candidate. In order to be considered, you must have received an offer for a place on your chosen programme of study/research well in advance of this time.

Loughborough University Graduate School Development Trust Africa Scholarships: Full-fee Scholarships

Loughborough University is delighted to announce full-fee scholarships for international full-time taught postgraduate students who are currently domiciled (permanently living) in Africa.

These will be known as the Loughborough University Graduate School Development Trust Africa Scholarships. The scholarships will cover 100% of the course fees for your chosen postgraduate taught course for one year (replacing any Departmental or Loughborough University scholarships or bursaries you may already have been awarded).

The scholarships are being funded through a combination of generous external funding and University funds. The University will award a limited number of scholarships and the standards required are very high.

Students will be expected to fund their travel and maintenance costs through other sources.
Application Process and Eligibility Criteria

For entry 2009 the scholarship application procedure is an open competition. Students may only apply for the scholarship after an offer for a place has been made. Students who are in possession of an offer (conditional or unconditional) of a place on a postgraduate taught course can apply for the scholarship using the application form which can be downloaded below.

The deadline for applications is 30th April 2009.

Applications will be initially shortlisted and the final decision on the awards will be made by a selection panel of senior staff of the University. The selection panel will use the following eligibility criteria when assessing applications:

* Currently domiciled (permanently living) in Africa
* Evidence of exceptional academic achievement (normally a 1st Class Honours Degree)
* Commitment to return to their home country on completion of postgraduate programme
* Evidence of the ability and commitment to making a significant contribution to their home country on their return
* Full understanding of the costs involved in coming to study and live in the UK
* Evidence of strong motivation and initiative to secure funds to cover the remainder of the costs involved

Loughborough University Graduate School International Scholarships

New information for 2009/2010

Over 100 scholarships will be available in 2009/2010 to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a country outside the European Union (EU).

These scholarships will be to the value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.

The Loughborough University Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of outstanding academic achievement and potential. Each scholarship will be of 1 year's duration.

Different Departments will have varying criteria for awarding Scholarships, however, in general we will be looking for students who have the equivalent of a UK First Class honours degree, or a very high 2:1 OR who have sufficient grades to demonstrate the potential to achieve this level. The precise grades vary from country to country, but the following is intended for general guidance:

* CGPA (cumulative grade point average) – Many countries around the world have a CGPA system scored out of 4.0. In such cases students with CGPA of over 3.3 would be encouraged to apply. Other countries (such as Nigeria and Saudi Arabia) have GPA out of 5.0. In such cases students with a GPA of 4.3 or above would be encouraged to apply.
* Percentages – The system for percentages varies greatly across the world. In Ghana around 68% would be considered excellent, whereas in China closer to 85% would be required to be regarded as a top grade. In India grades of above 75% would normally be required (and certainly a 1st Class with Distinction) – but this will vary from institution to institution. In Pakistan again over 75% would typically be required. If you are in any doubt as to whether your grades would be regarded as outstanding, please contact the International Office.
* Personal Statement / Work experience – The award may also be made to students who show outstanding achievement or potential in other areas. The personal statement is the opportunity to show that you have an exceptional background of achievement in other areas such as work or voluntary activities and for you to show that you have the potential to make an exceptional contribution to the University, and to society after you graduate.

Deferring your place

If an applicant finds it necessary to defer his or her application to the next academic year, then the scholarship award will not automatically be deferred. Applicants will need to apply again under the following year's scholarship scheme.

Heriot -Watt University Scholarships

Number of Awards: 2300 per year by the programme in UK institutions

British Chevening Scholarships, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and administered by the British Council, are prestigious awards which enable overseas students to study in the United Kingdom. Scholarships are offered in over 150 countries and enable talented graduates and young professionals to become familiar with the UK and gain skills which will benefit their countries. The Chevening programme currently provides around 2,300 new scholarships each year for postgraduate studies or research at UK institutions of Higher Education. 2. Number of Awards: 1,000 per annum worldwide

Scholarships for Commonwealth citizens to study in UK and other Commonwealth countries. Apply early through Commonwealth Scholarship Agency in country of residence.

3. Availability: International (Commonwealth citizens)

These scholarships are available for all full-time postgraduate Masters courses. These awards are available through Heriot-Watt to assist students from developing Commonwealth countries to come to the UK for a one-year taught Masters degree when they would otherwise be financially unable to do so. The award has an upper age limit of 35 with preference given to applicants under 30 years of age. Government employees are ineligible. Awards made under this programme must be relevant to the economic, scientific and social development of the applicants' home country. The scheme is administered by the Association of Commonwealth Universities and applicants must have or expect to attain the equivalent of a UK First Class Honours Degree.

The Scholarships cover:

* tuition fees;
* a maintenance grant of £689 per month;
* an arrival allowance of £689;
* air fare to and from the UK.

In partnership with the Heart of Midlothian Football Academy, Heriot-Watt University offers football bursaries to players who wish to continue their development while studying for a degree classification. Whether you are working with a professional club or are aspiring to become a professional either during or post your time at the University, then our programme will be able to support your progress. You will be eligible to represent the University in the Scottish Universities League and the Semi-Professional East of Scotland League. Support includes twice weekly team sessions, twice weekly individual sessions, Sports Science and Medicine Support and finally access to our excellent football facilities which provide indoor, outdoor and grass surfaces. A number of scholarships are awarded annually in the form of free music tuition for instrumentalists and vocalists who have been accepted onto a course. Awards last for one year with the probability of annual extension for the full period of study at University. Applicants are required to provide evidence of their musical ability. New in 2008, Sports Bursaries have been introduced to offer students the opportunity to represent Heriot-Watt at the top level, while continuing to train and develop as an elite athlete while studying at the University. The Centre for Sport and Exercise has been running its Sports Scholarship Programme for over 20 years. The programme offers support in the region of £2,000 to athletes considered to be of national standard in any of our 32 Sports Union sports. Always expanding, our programme now offers Sports Science and Sports Medicine support, academic flexibility, financial support for training and competition expenses, scholar clothing and access to the Centre for Sport and Exercise facilities. These Scholarships provide full University fees and a contribution towards maintenance of around £2,000 to £5,000 per annum for up to three years. Students must be undertaking research in a field of relevance to the built environment.
